We are experiencing a phase change in land use classes: from typically extractive forms, expressed by raw material or energy production, to restorative forms, typified by nature restoration. With that phase change comes a degree of instability — spelling an opportunity for genuine reform of existing land ownership and land use decision-making structures. Whether that opportunity is seized on to increase the share of land held by incorporated community bodies or other organisations is a separate matter — a change in that share, though, along the lines of the first criterion, is necessary.
Ted - this is so interesting. Really glad to have you on the Rewilding Law Group and hoping that some of these issues may come up as part of future discussions, especially with Lifescape as a responsible body when it comes to conservation covenants!
That's very kind Edwina, thank you. Looking forward to the discussion on large herbivores this Tuesday! And yes — exciting that Lifescape is now a responsible body. I recall Adam and Amelia telling me about this a while back, it's definitely part of the solution. Lifescape's resources and guidance for this were very useful too!
Looking forward to the solutions! Out of curiosity though, could this Land Fund be the solution if it was larger? Maybe we will find out in the next one
I’m looking forward to delving into them! Shan’t spoil the role the Scottish Land Fund plays and can play — I’ll likely touch on this next week or the week after.
Thank you for your continued support Eoin! Do share the posts with anyone you might think is interested, and please do share on LinkedIn so more folk can come across the series.

Excellent piece, Ted - I'm looking forward to seeing an application of the 5 criteria!
